Can Thyme Deal with Zits Successfully?

I thought I would share this interesting article that I found on the Yahoo lifestyle website last week. He claimed thyme could be a gentle but effective natural alternative to traditional chemical acne treatments.

Yahoo reports that Leeds Metropolitan University scientists have tested the effectiveness of thyme tincture in killing the acne-causing bacterium Propionibacterium acnes.

Compared to standard concentrations of the chemical benzoyl peroxide used in most acne creams and detergents, the thyme tincture was found to have a stronger antibacterial effect.

As a natural formulation, the lead researcher Dr. Margarita Gomez Escalada that the thyme tincture is also less likely to cause the burning and irritation associated with typical benzoyl peroxide treatments.

The tincture was made by soaking thyme in alcohol, so I am not convinced that it is suitable for sensitive skin – and probably incredibly dry out.

It is also believed that essential thyme oil acts as an emmenagogue (Östregen mimic). Therefore, as a precaution, avoid trying this at home if you are pregnant.
