Is Soy Dangerous for You?

<p> While countries with a long history of soy consumption have developed fermentation methods to neutralize these toxins, most Westerners consume non-fermented soy in the form of milk, tofu and baby food. </p>
<p> You can also find non-fermented soy in packaged or processed foods such as protein bars, grains, mayonnaise, and meat substitutes, as it is often used as a cheap source of protein. </p>
<p> <strong> Why Could It Be Harmful? </strong> </p>
<p> Most of the controversy surrounding soy is due to the presence of <strong> isoflavones </strong>a herbal compound that resembles estrogen. </p>
<p> This phytoestrogen (as the imitators are called) can potentially disrupt your endocrine system <strong> and your hormone balance </strong> </strong> – which controls fertility, puberty, and the body's response to certain types of cancer </p>
<p> It is believed that the isoflavones in soy are particularly strong. For example, according to a study by the Dunn Clinical Nutrition Center, drinking just two glasses of soy milk a day could provide enough isoflavenes to <strong> change the menstrual cycle of women </strong>. </p>
<p> Unfermented soy also contains a lot of phytic acid, which prevents the absorption of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and zinc in our body. </p>
<p> <strong> Alternatives to non-fermented soy </strong> </p>
<p> While you may want to avoid unfermented soy, <strong> fermented soy </strong> is an excellent source of vitamins and nutrients, including vitamin K2 – which can specifically help prevent osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and dementia. </p>
<p> Examples of fermented soy foods include tempeh, miso, natto and fermented soy sauce. </p>
<p> If you drink soy milk as a milk substitute, almond, coconut and hemp seed milk are delicious alternatives. </p>
<p> Unfermented soy finds its way into so many foods on our shelves that it is difficult to see. In general, I would always advise you to eat fresh, unprocessed foods and read your labels! </p>
